How we score ↗How big and forgiving the barrel is — based on barrel length, construction (one- vs two-piece, alloy vs composite), and how it plays on balls hit off the center. A primary driver of the overall score.
This bat: 13-inch MAX FLEX barrel keeps the zone large at USA compression.
Raw exit velocity and distance. We use measured numbers from freely available independent testing when they exist; otherwise construction and consensus, judged against the certification’s performance ceiling. A primary driver of the overall score.
This bat: Maxload helps, but the USA ceiling limits outright pop.
Comfort and feedback on contact — vibration dampening from the knob/connection, the sting of a stiff one-piece vs a smooth two-piece, and the sound off the barrel. A primary driver of the overall score.
This bat: Two-piece Freak feel with the Mid Flex handle.
How well it holds up and how the company stands behind it — documented cracking/denting reports, cold-weather behavior, and the brand’s real warranty record. Good to know, but weighted lightly in the score.
This bat: Standard Miken composite, 1-year warranty; no track record yet.
Our take on price-for-performance — the overall package weighed against its cost and what comparable bats run. Shown for context; it is NOT factored into the overall score (price changes too often and is personal).
This bat: $299.99 on sale is fair for a premium USA two-piece.
Why this score: First-pass score, in line with the 2026 Freak Maxload 2-Piece USA (8.1): same platform, half an inch less barrel, MAX FLEX layup instead of V2 Flex. No independent USA-ball testing on this model yet.
Our Review
The 2026 Miken Freak Black Maxload USA (MSA6FKBLKL) is the USA Softball-legal sibling of the blackout Freak, and it is a different barrel from the USSSA model rather than just a re-stamp. It runs a 13-inch barrel on Miken's MAX FLEX layup, which is built to squeeze as much rebound as possible out of the harder-compression USA ball, in the same two-piece frame with the Mid Flex handle, A1 knob and .5 oz Maxload. The USA standard caps how hot any bat can play, so this Freak will feel a step less explosive than a USSSA Freak on the 1.20 ball — that is the certification, not the bat. What it does well is keep the sweet spot big, keep the swing controlled, and take the sting out of mis-hits the way the two-piece Freaks always have. It is USA/ASA approved only, offered in 34-inch at 25, 26 and 27 oz, and backed by a 1-year warranty. Like every fresh composite it needs a break-in before it reaches full pop.
