How we score ↗How big and forgiving the barrel is — based on barrel length, construction (one- vs two-piece, alloy vs composite), and how it plays on balls hit off the center. A primary driver of the overall score.
This bat: V2 Flex is a proven hot layup, but 12.5 inches is simply less barrel than the 13.5-inch Freak.
Raw exit velocity and distance. We use measured numbers from freely available independent testing when they exist; otherwise construction and consensus, judged against the certification’s performance ceiling. A primary driver of the overall score.
This bat: Maxload plus a compact barrel that gets through the zone quickly.
Comfort and feedback on contact — vibration dampening from the knob/connection, the sting of a stiff one-piece vs a smooth two-piece, and the sound off the barrel. A primary driver of the overall score.
This bat: Two-piece connection and Mid Flex handle — the classic Freak feel.
How well it holds up and how the company stands behind it — documented cracking/denting reports, cold-weather behavior, and the brand’s real warranty record. Good to know, but weighted lightly in the score.
This bat: Same platform as the Freak line; 1-year warranty.
Our take on price-for-performance — the overall package weighed against its cost and what comparable bats run. Shown for context; it is NOT factored into the overall score (price changes too often and is personal).
This bat: $299.99 on sale is fair for a premium USSSA two-piece.
Why this score: First-pass score. Placed just under the 13.5-inch 2026 Freak Maxload 2-Piece USSSA (8.5): identical barrel tech and load, one inch less barrel. No independent testing yet on the Freak Black specifically.
Our Review
The 2026 Miken Freak Black Maxload (MSU6FKBLKL) is the murdered-out addition to the Freak family, and it is not just a paint job — it is the compact-barrel version of the two-piece Freak. Where the standard 2026 Freak Maxload runs a full 13.5-inch V2 Flex barrel, the Freak Black runs 12.5 inches on the same V2 Flex layup, same Mid Flex handle, same A1 knob and the same .5 oz Maxload. The shorter barrel concentrates the mass and lets the bat come through the zone faster for a loaded stick, which is the trade a lot of experienced hitters want: they give up an inch of hitting surface for a swing that feels tighter and quicker. The two-piece connection does what it does on every Freak — takes the sting out of mis-hits and adds a little whip. It is USSSA 1.20 BPF, NSA and ISA approved (not USA Softball; there is a separate 13-inch USA version), comes in 34-inch at 25, 26 and 27 oz, and carries Miken's 1-year warranty. As a fresh composite it needs the usual break-in before peak pop.

- 12.5-inch barrel gives up hitting surface to the 13.5-inch Freak Maxload
