2026 Old Hickory MT27 Mike Trout Ash Wood Bat Review
Mike Trout's Custom Pro turn cut from northern white ash instead of maple: a long-barreled, balanced bat with the forgiving flex and break behavior ash is known for.
The Score
How we score ↗The grade, density and grain of the billet — slope-of-grain, ink-dot certification, and whether it’s a true pro-cut. The headline for a wood bat. A primary driver of the overall score.
Barrel size and the turn-model profile (110/243/271/I13 and the like) — how much hitting surface and forgiveness the shape gives you.
How the wood feels and sounds at contact — the flex/stiffness of the handle, and the crack off a quality billet.
How well the wood holds up — density and grain quality (and, for composite wood, engineered toughness). Far more important on a wood bat than on alloy.
How hard the ball comes off for a wood bat — real, but a lighter factor here since wood isn’t about chasing max exit velocity.
Quality per dollar versus comparable pro-grade or composite wood. Shown for context; NOT factored into the overall score.
Why this score: The long, balanced MT27 turn and forgiving ash feel score well; power is a notch lower than maple because ash is less dense.
Our Review
This is the same MT27 turn Old Hickory sends Trout, but cut from top-graded northern white ash rather than maple. Ash flexes more than maple, giving a slightly springier feel and a tendency to crack and give warning rather than shatter outright, which some hitters prefer. The MT27 profile is a long-barreled, well-balanced turn with a large sweet spot. Ash is lighter and less dense than maple, so it will not feel quite as hard on contact, and ash grain needs more care to keep flat-side-up; in exchange you get a classic, forgiving feel from genuine Custom Pro lumber.
Pros & Cons

- Ash flex gives a forgiving feel and safer break behavior
- Genuine Custom Pro lumber, the same turn sent to Trout
Cons
- Ash is less dense than maple, so contact feels a touch softer
- Ash grain requires more care and can flake over time
