How we score ↗The grade, density and grain of the billet — slope-of-grain, ink-dot certification, and whether it’s a true pro-cut. The headline for a wood bat. A primary driver of the overall score.
Barrel size and the turn-model profile (110/243/271/I13 and the like) — how much hitting surface and forgiveness the shape gives you.
How the wood feels and sounds at contact — the flex/stiffness of the handle, and the crack off a quality billet.
How well the wood holds up — density and grain quality (and, for composite wood, engineered toughness). Far more important on a wood bat than on alloy.
How hard the ball comes off for a wood bat — real, but a lighter factor here since wood isn’t about chasing max exit velocity.
Quality per dollar versus comparable pro-grade or composite wood. Shown for context; NOT factored into the overall score.
Why this score: Proven 271 hard-maple turn delivers reliable feel and durability; slight end-load trims swing ease a touch, while the low sale price drives a high value score.
Our Review
The Adirondack name goes back generations, and this R271MB carries it on a 271 turn cut from Northeastern hard maple. It pairs a medium barrel with a sturdy 15/16" handle and a slightly end-loaded swing that's still easy to control through the zone, which is why Rawlings positions it for both contact and power hitters. A 33" comes in right around 30 oz, so it sits in that approachable -2 to -3 range. The natural barrel/black handle finish is about as timeless as wood bats get. It ships without a warranty, but the combination of a recognized turn, hard maple and a sub-$70 sale price makes it one of the better-value pro-style gamers around.
