2018 DeMarini CF Zen USSSA Bat Review
The 2018 CF Zen was DeMarini's flagship travel-ball composite and one of the most popular USSSA bats of its generation, with a Paraflex+ barrel that swings light and produces big pop. Performance was real; durability and warranty support were the long-standing knocks.
Been on the market a while — keep an eye out for in-season price drops.

How we score ↗How big and forgiving the barrel is — based on barrel length, construction (one- vs two-piece, alloy vs composite), and how it plays on balls hit off the center. A primary driver of the overall score.
Raw exit velocity and distance. We use measured numbers from freely available independent testing when they exist; otherwise construction and consensus, judged against the certification’s performance ceiling. A primary driver of the overall score.
Comfort and feedback on contact — vibration dampening from the knob/connection, the sting of a stiff one-piece vs a smooth two-piece, and the sound off the barrel. A primary driver of the overall score.
How well it holds up and how the company stands behind it — documented cracking/denting reports, cold-weather behavior, and the brand’s real warranty record. Good to know, but weighted lightly in the score.
Our take on price-for-performance — the overall package weighed against its cost and what comparable bats run. Shown for context; it is NOT factored into the overall score (price changes too often and is personal).
Why this score: On performance the 2018 CF Zen is top-tier for its era: the Paraflex+ barrel earns excellent power and an outstanding, ultra-light swing weight, with good feel from the two-piece build. Where it falls down is the long game — DeMarini composites of this period carry a documented record of cracking and stingy warranty service, so durability and value are weighted down honestly. A hitter who wants the same light, hot composite is better protected with a more reliable alternative.
Our Review
The 2018 CF Zen was a genuine star in travel ball, a two-piece, fully composite bat built around DeMarini's Paraflex+ barrel and 3Fusion connection. In the -10 it is one of the lightest-swinging, most balanced composites of its era, with a massive sweet spot and the springy, hot-out-of-the-wrapper performance the CF line was famous for. On pure hitting it competed with anything in the USSSA market and remains a sought-after bat on the used circuit. Our reservation is durability and support. DeMarini composites of this period have a well-documented history of cracking and denting, and warranty service has been a recurring source of frustration for buyers, both of which matter over a full travel-ball season. For the same light, hot composite profile from a brand with a stronger track record behind its product, a preferred-brand alternative is the safer long-term buy.
Also worth a look: Easton ADV 360 USSSA — Same premium light-swinging two-piece composite profile — a Launch Comp barrel that rivals the CF on pop and feel — from a preferred brand with a stronger durability and support reputation..
Insider Note
On a visit to DeMarini's factory in Oregon, I saw 4–5 pallets of broken bats waiting on warranty returns — and was told that's a normal day. Durability has always been the knock on DeMarini, and it's a big reason we steer hitters to brands that stand behind their product.
