2019 Marucci CAT8 BBCOR Bat Review
The CAT8 is the bat that cemented Marucci's one-piece alloy as the go-to for hitters who want a clean, traditional feel with a genuinely huge barrel. AZ105 alloy let Marucci add an eighth wall thickness over the CAT7, and the result is one of the most trusted no-break-in BBCOR bats ever made.
The Score
How we score ↗How big and forgiving the barrel is — based on barrel length, construction (one- vs two-piece, alloy vs composite), and how it plays on balls hit off the center. A primary driver of the overall score.
This bat: Eight-wall AZ105 design spreads the sweet spot wide for a one-piece.
Raw exit velocity and distance. We use measured numbers from freely available independent testing when they exist; otherwise construction and consensus, judged against the certification’s performance ceiling. A primary driver of the overall score.
This bat: Thin, responsive alloy walls give honest pop, hot from the first swing.
Comfort and feedback on contact — vibration dampening from the knob/connection, the sting of a stiff one-piece vs a smooth two-piece, and the sound off the barrel. A primary driver of the overall score.
This bat: Stiff one-piece feel with AV2 knob keeping mishit sting in check.
How well it holds up and how the company stands behind it — documented cracking/denting reports, cold-weather behavior, and the brand’s real warranty record. Good to know, but weighted lightly in the score.
This bat: AZ105 alloy and Marucci's warranty record are a known quantity.
Our take on price-for-performance — the overall package weighed against its cost and what comparable bats run. Shown for context; it is NOT factored into the overall score (price changes too often and is personal).
This bat: A proven alloy workhorse that holds up season after season.
Why this score: The CAT8 earns its reputation: a big, forgiving one-piece alloy barrel that is hot day one and famously durable. It loses a touch only to the stiff feedback inherent to one-piece alloy and a swing weight that won't please end-load seekers.
Our Review
Marucci built the 2019 CAT8 around its AZ105 super-strength aluminum, the strongest alloy in the CAT line at the time, which allowed thinner, more responsive walls without giving up durability. The headline change from the CAT7 is the move to eight distinct barrel-wall thicknesses (hence the name), spreading material to expand the sweet spot on a ring-free, multi-variable wall design. It's a one-piece, so the feel is direct and stiff, but the AV2 anti-vibration knob takes most of the sting out of mishits. There's no break-in here: it's hot out of the wrapper and stays consistent. The balanced swing weight makes it an easy fit for contact hitters and middle-of-the-order types alike, and years of field use have made it one of the most reliable alloy BBCOR bats on the market.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- AZ105 alloy with eight wall thicknesses delivers a large, forgiving one-piece barrel
- Hot out of the wrapper with zero break-in and a clean, traditional feel
- AV2 anti-vibration knob keeps sting low on off-center contact
Cons
- One-piece alloy transmits more feedback than a two-piece on bad mishits
- Balanced swing won't satisfy hitters chasing a heavy end-load
