How we score ↗How big and forgiving the barrel is — based on barrel length, construction (one- vs two-piece, alloy vs composite), and how it plays on balls hit off the center. A primary driver of the overall score.
This bat: Ring-free AZR barrel profile spreads a wide, forgiving zone.
Raw exit velocity and distance. We use measured numbers from freely available independent testing when they exist; otherwise construction and consensus, judged against the certification’s performance ceiling. A primary driver of the overall score.
This bat: Hot alloy barrel plus end load drives the ball hard.
Comfort and feedback on contact — vibration dampening from the knob/connection, the sting of a stiff one-piece vs a smooth two-piece, and the sound off the barrel. A primary driver of the overall score.
This bat: Composite handle and outer-locking joint dampen mishits well.
How well it holds up and how the company stands behind it — documented cracking/denting reports, cold-weather behavior, and the brand’s real warranty record. Good to know, but weighted lightly in the score.
This bat: AZR alloy and Marucci's warranty support a strong record.
Our take on price-for-performance — the overall package weighed against its cost and what comparable bats run. Shown for context; it is NOT factored into the overall score (price changes too often and is personal).
This bat: Premium-priced for a hybrid, but the build earns most of it.
Why this score: A polished end-loaded hybrid that is hot day one and exceptionally clean on mishits. It loses a step only on swing weight for contact hitters and a flagship price that asks a lot for a hybrid.
Our Review
The CATX Connect is the two-piece hybrid in Marucci's CATX family, joining a thermally treated AZR alloy barrel to an S-40 composite handle. AZR runs through a three-stage thermal treatment for a more responsive microstructure, and the new CATX barrel profile uses a multi-variable, ring-free wall to thin the walls and widen the sweet spot. The Connect designation means a stiff outer-locking system bonds barrel to handle, transferring energy efficiently while dismissing nearly all the vibration that a one-piece alloy would send back to the hands. The trade-off is swing weight: the Connect plays end-loaded, putting mass behind the ball for power hitters who want to feel the barrel work. It's hot out of the wrapper with the alloy barrel and forgiving on off-center hits thanks to the composite handle. At $399.99 MSRP it's priced like a flagship, but the hybrid build and clean feel back it up for the right hitter.
