How we score ↗How big and forgiving the barrel is — based on barrel length, construction (one- vs two-piece, alloy vs composite), and how it plays on balls hit off the center. A primary driver of the overall score.
Raw exit velocity and distance. We use measured numbers from freely available independent testing when they exist; otherwise construction and consensus, judged against the certification’s performance ceiling. A primary driver of the overall score.
Comfort and feedback on contact — vibration dampening from the knob/connection, the sting of a stiff one-piece vs a smooth two-piece, and the sound off the barrel. A primary driver of the overall score.
How well it holds up and how the company stands behind it — documented cracking/denting reports, cold-weather behavior, and the brand’s real warranty record. Good to know, but weighted lightly in the score.
Our take on price-for-performance — the overall package weighed against its cost and what comparable bats run. Shown for context; it is NOT factored into the overall score (price changes too often and is personal).
Why this score: The CATX2 Composite's calling card is feel — the responsive MDX barrel and stiff OLS connection make it smooth and low-vibration. Sweet spot and power are good but not class-leading; in head-to-head testing it lands mid-pack among current BBCORs and trails the hotter alloy CATs and top composites for raw exit velocity, so those scores are held to solid rather than elite. Swing weight is fine if not feathery, and value is limited by the premium price and the composite break-in. Marucci durability backing helps.
Our Review
The CATX2 Composite is Marucci's swing at the top of the composite class, and it competes: the MDX barrel uses multi-directionally patterned layers for an ultra-responsive sweet spot, while the Outer-Locking System bolts the barrel to the handle from the outside in for one of the stiffest, lowest-vibration connections you can buy. The retuned S-35 handle is five percent more flexible than the prior S-40, which softens the feel slightly without losing energy transfer. The mid-balanced swing splits the difference between speed and power well, making it a versatile pick for a wide range of hitters. Like any composite it needs break-in, and the premium price means value depends on a discount, but the performance and Marucci's durability backing make it one of the stronger composites of its year.
