Why this score: A purpose-built first bat - extremely light and durable for tiny hitters - scored honestly low on pop and feel because it is an entry alloy, not a performance bat.

Our Review

The Mizuno Finch (FINCH13) is an entry-level, one-piece aluminum bat aimed squarely at beginning fastpitch players, carrying the name of Olympic gold medalist Jennie Finch. Built from MZ-2200+ aluminum alloy in a -13 drop, it is one of the lightest fastpitch bats made, which is exactly what a small, developing hitter needs to learn to swing on plane and build bat speed. The one-piece alloy construction means there is no break-in and excellent durability - it will survive the dings of youth play - and the Speed Helix grip adds comfort and control. It is approved for USA/ASA, USSSA, NSA and ISA, so it covers virtually all youth leagues. This is not a performance bat and is not meant to be: the alloy barrel and ultra-light build cap its pop, and players will outgrow it within a couple of seasons as they get stronger. For a first bat, though, it is honest, affordable and exactly right for the job.

Also worth a look: Easton Ghost Unlimited — our top fastpitch pick once a hitter is ready for a real performance composite.
