How we score ↗How big and forgiving the barrel is — based on barrel length, construction (one- vs two-piece, alloy vs composite), and how it plays on balls hit off the center. A primary driver of the overall score.
Raw exit velocity and distance. We use measured numbers from freely available independent testing when they exist; otherwise construction and consensus, judged against the certification’s performance ceiling. A primary driver of the overall score.
Comfort and feedback on contact — vibration dampening from the knob/connection, the sting of a stiff one-piece vs a smooth two-piece, and the sound off the barrel. A primary driver of the overall score.
How well it holds up and how the company stands behind it — documented cracking/denting reports, cold-weather behavior, and the brand’s real warranty record. Good to know, but weighted lightly in the score.
Our take on price-for-performance — the overall package weighed against its cost and what comparable bats run. Shown for context; it is NOT factored into the overall score (price changes too often and is personal).
Why this score: Power and feel are the headline numbers: the loaded AZR barrel and full anti-vibration package give a strong hitter real pop with a clean, dampened contact experience. It's a solid mid-of-the-order hybrid, but in head-to-head testing it lands mid-pack among current BBCORs rather than at the very top, so power and feel are held to strong rather than elite. Swing weight scores lower by design because the end-load is demanding. Durability is strong for a hybrid thanks to the alloy barrel, and value is held back by the premium sticker.
Our Review
Marucci builds the CATX2 Connect for hitters who generate their own bat speed and want every ounce of it converted into power. The thermally treated AZR alloy barrel sits on a carbon composite handle, and the connection, knob, and end cap all carry anti-vibration tech, so the end-load you feel through the swing doesn't translate into sting on contact. Compared with the one-piece CATX2, the Connect's longer barrel and shifted balance point reward a strong, on-time swing and punish a late one. There's no break-in because the barrel is alloy, which is a real advantage over full-composite rivals. It is a premium-priced bat, and the end-load makes it the wrong call for a contact or speed hitter, but for a middle-of-the-order bat it is one of the more refined hybrids on the shelf.
