How we score ↗How big and forgiving the barrel is — based on barrel length, construction (one- vs two-piece, alloy vs composite), and how it plays on balls hit off the center. A primary driver of the overall score.
This bat: XXL barrel contour gives the biggest one-piece sweet spot Easton makes.
Raw exit velocity and distance. We use measured numbers from freely available independent testing when they exist; otherwise construction and consensus, judged against the certification’s performance ceiling. A primary driver of the overall score.
This bat: Re-balanced barrel mass and composite trampoline produce strong pop.
Comfort and feedback on contact — vibration dampening from the knob/connection, the sting of a stiff one-piece vs a smooth two-piece, and the sound off the barrel. A primary driver of the overall score.
This bat: Seamless one-piece composite feel, smooth on contact with Flow-Tack grip.
How well it holds up and how the company stands behind it — documented cracking/denting reports, cold-weather behavior, and the brand’s real warranty record. Good to know, but weighted lightly in the score.
This bat: Composite one-piece; solid but benefits from proper break-in care.
Our take on price-for-performance — the overall package weighed against its cost and what comparable bats run. Shown for context; it is NOT factored into the overall score (price changes too often and is personal).
This bat: Flagship build at a deep clearance price is hard to beat.
Why this score: An outstanding barrel-first one-piece composite that is smooth, forgiving, and now a tremendous value. It gives up a little on swing weight for balance-seekers and the break-in window every composite requires.
Our Review
Easton built the Maxum Ultra around its Seamless Carbon Construction, a one-piece composite layup engineered to feel stiff and connected like a true one-piece while opening up a massive composite sweet spot. The headline is the XXL barrel profile, the largest contour Easton puts on a one-piece bat. Easton re-balanced the Ultra versus the earlier Maxum 360 by adding mass to the barrel, so it carries a slight end-load that rewards power and gap hitters with extra momentum at contact. As a composite, it benefits from a real break-in of roughly 150-200 swings before it fully opens up, after which the pop and forgiveness on off-center contact are excellent. The Flow-Tack grip is among Easton's best. A few model years on, it's a discontinued bat with flagship construction now selling at a deep discount, which makes it one of the better value plays in BBCOR for a hitter who wants barrel above all.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- XXL one-piece barrel is the largest contour Easton offers, with a huge sweet spot
- Seamless Carbon gives composite forgiveness with one-piece stiffness
- Now heavily discounted, making it a strong value for the construction
Cons
- Needs a real composite break-in before it fully performs
- Slight end-load won't suit hitters who want a dead-balanced swing
