How we score ↗How big and forgiving the barrel is — based on barrel length, construction (one- vs two-piece, alloy vs composite), and how it plays on balls hit off the center. A primary driver of the overall score.
Raw exit velocity and distance. We use measured numbers from freely available independent testing when they exist; otherwise construction and consensus, judged against the certification’s performance ceiling. A primary driver of the overall score.
Comfort and feedback on contact — vibration dampening from the knob/connection, the sting of a stiff one-piece vs a smooth two-piece, and the sound off the barrel. A primary driver of the overall score.
How well it holds up and how the company stands behind it — documented cracking/denting reports, cold-weather behavior, and the brand’s real warranty record. Good to know, but weighted lightly in the score.
Our take on price-for-performance — the overall package weighed against its cost and what comparable bats run. Shown for context; it is NOT factored into the overall score (price changes too often and is personal).
Why this score: The CAT9 Connect earns top-end power marks thanks to its AZR alloy barrel and end-loaded build, with strong feel from the Outer Locking System that quiets sting better than most hybrids. Durability is excellent for an alloy-barreled bat. Swing weight scores lower because the end load genuinely swings heavy and is not for every hitter, but as a closeout flagship the value is strong.
Our Review
The CAT9 Connect is the hybrid half of Marucci's CAT9 family: the same thermally treated AZR alloy barrel as the one-piece CAT9, but bonded to a carbon composite handle through Marucci's Outer Locking System, which attaches from the outside in for an unusually stiff connection that still drains vibration on contact. That construction, plus a deliberate end load, makes this a power hitter's bat. Loaded through the barrel, it carries momentum into the zone and rewards a player with the strength and bat speed to whip it through. Hitters who get out front and drive the ball will love the feel and the carry; lighter or developing hitters will find it a step slow versus a balanced one-piece. As a discounted past-year hybrid, it remains one of the more dependable end-loaded alloy options in travel ball.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Thermally treated AZR alloy barrel delivers a wide, hot sweet spot
- Outer Locking System makes the stiffest connection in the line while killing sting
- End-loaded build helps strong hitters drive the ball with extra momentum
Cons
- The end load makes it swing heavier and demands real bat speed to use well
- Smaller or contact-first hitters will be slower to the ball than with a balanced bat
