2027 Easton Speed Comp USA Baseball Bat Review
Easton's fastest-swinging USA youth bat: a -13 one-piece composite built from Hyperlite, Easton's lightest composite, with a 90% carbon handle that kills vibration and a Speed Cap barrel end.
Same bat, lower price. The 2024 Speed Comp is a very similar bat and usually sells for less → $65The Score
How we score ↗How big and forgiving the barrel is — based on barrel length, construction (one- vs two-piece, alloy vs composite), and how it plays on balls hit off the center. A primary driver of the overall score.
Raw exit velocity and distance. We use measured numbers from freely available independent testing when they exist; otherwise construction and consensus, judged against the certification’s performance ceiling. A primary driver of the overall score.
Comfort and feedback on contact — vibration dampening from the knob/connection, the sting of a stiff one-piece vs a smooth two-piece, and the sound off the barrel. A primary driver of the overall score.
How well it holds up and how the company stands behind it — documented cracking/denting reports, cold-weather behavior, and the brand’s real warranty record. Good to know, but weighted lightly in the score.
Our take on price-for-performance — the overall package weighed against its cost and what comparable bats run. Shown for context; it is NOT factored into the overall score (price changes too often and is personal).
Why this score: First-pass score, clearly labeled: no independent exit-velocity data yet for the 2027 edition. Anchored to the 2024 Speed Comp USA (6.3); feel up for the Carbon Zero handle, value down for the $199.99 price. Durability reflects a thin-wall ultra-light composite.
Our Review
The Speed Comp is Easton's answer to the lightest-swing question in USA Baseball: a one-piece composite made from Hyperlite, Easton's lightest composite material, with a Carbon Zero handle that is 90% carbon fiber in a zero-degree layup for stiffness and a near-total absence of vibration. The Speed Cap on the barrel end is designed to be more responsive than a standard cap. It comes at -13 in 26" through 30", which makes it one of the lightest full-barrel USA bats sold, and the point of the design is simple: a 7-to-10-year-old who can't get a -10 alloy around on time can get this one around. The trade-off is inherent. A -13 composite puts very little mass behind the ball, and under the USA standard, which already caps performance, that shows up as modest exit speeds for anyone with real bat speed. Composite also needs break-in and can crack in cold weather. We scored the 2024 Speed Comp at 6.3; the 2027 edition adds the Carbon Zero handle and the Speed Cap and jumps the price to $199.99, so we nudge feel up and value down as a first pass. It's the right bat for the small, quick hitter who needs bat speed first and the wrong bat for the kid who already has it.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- -13 in a full 2 5/8" barrel is about as light as a USA bat gets — 7–10U hitters can finish the swing
- Carbon Zero handle is stiff and nearly sting-free for a one-piece
- Composite barrel gives more forgiveness off-center than the alloy bats at this price
Cons
- Ultra-light composite means little mass behind contact; strong 11-12U hitters will outgrow it fast
- Composite needs break-in and is vulnerable in cold weather
- $199.99 is a lot for a bat with a two-season window
